All camp sessions will be held with a maximum of 24 campers at each session.  PLEASE NOTE LOCATION CHANGES FOR THE CHARLESTON CAMPS -- ALSO NOTE AGE GROUPS FOR EACH CAMP!  Space is limited due to the COVID-19 crisis and the Governor’s required mandate. We will be following all CDC guidelines to keep our campers safe during camp.

The following rules will be in effect:

  • EVERY CAMPER WILL BE GREETED AT THE FRONT OF COACH WHITE'S HOUSE.

  • PARENTS CANNOT ATTEND DUE TO COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS AND LACK OF SEATING.

  • ALL CAMPERS WILL BE CLOSELY SUPERVISED AT ALL TIMES BY COACH WHITE.

  • THERE WILL NOT BE AN AWARDS CEREMONY DUE TO COVID 19 RESTRICTIONS WITH NO LARGE GATHERINGS.

  • THERE WILL BE NO SHARING OF WATER BOTTLES. IF YOU CHOOSE TO BRING YOUR OWN WATER OR SPORTS DRINK, PLEASE PUT YOUR NAME ON THE BOTTLE. WE WILL PROVIDE WATER BOTTLES FOR EVERYONE WHO DOES NOT BRING THEIR OWN. WE'LL PUT YOUR NAME ON BOTTLE. THERE WILL BE NO SHARING OF WATER BOTTLES AT ANY TIME.

  • DUE TO LIMITED SPACE, THERE WILL BE NO WALK-UPS. PLEASE PRE-REGISTER.

  • WE WILL BE FOLLOWING CDC GUIDELINES AS BEST WE CAN TO KEEP OUR CAMPERS SAFE.

  • HAND SANITIZER WILL BE PROVIDED

  • WE WILL START AND END CAMP PROMPTLY EACH DAY.

  • EACH CAMPER WILL BE GIVEN THEIR OWN CAMP BALL WITH THEIR NAME ON IT. THAT IS THE ONLY BALL THEY WILL USE. WE WILL DO OUR BEST TO KEEP CAMPERS FROM TOUCHING OTHER CAMPERS BASKETBALLS. AT THE END OF CAMP, THE BALL IS THEIRS TO TAKE HOME.

TEACHING
AND LEARNING CONCEPTS
COACHING IS TEACHING

KISS CLASSROOM
(KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID)

ATTITUDE
  1. Listening

  2. Enthusiasm

  3. Work

  4. Stance

LISTENING
  1. Skill

  2. Attention Span

  3. Eyes

  4. Ears

FOUR LAWS OF LEARNING

#1: EXPLANATION

  1. Teach why we do particular things

  2. Use mental pictures, analogies, and stories to convey or reinforce

  3. Don’t give them too much – “Paralysis from Analysis”
“The more you think the slower your feet get!”

#2: DEMONSTRATION (SHOW THEM HOW!) – Emphasis on Proper Technique

  1. Coach

  2. Player

  3. Video (college or pro games)

#3: CORRECTION

  1. Patience (smile)

  2. Positive language – “Let’s try it this way now.”

  3. Find something good to say, then correct –
“You’re too good of a player to make that mistake.”
“I saw you do a great job last week. I know you can do better.”

  4. Antagonize & Positively Influence?  Is it possible?

#4: REPETITION – REPETITION – REPETITION

*Great teachers are “Masters of Overkill!”

*Develop good basketball habits

*Chalk & Talk will not get it done

*Repetitive & Competitive Drills

*Teach and Demand!

EMPATHY

Put yourself in their position. Observe your team: eyes, body language.  Remember what it was like to be their age. Each one is different.

DEVELOP COLLECTIVE EGO
(FIST vs FINGERS)

  • US

  • WE

  • OUR FAMILY

Behavior Modification – Selfish Play (Fire Extinguisher)

Win and lose as a team; no one points a finger!!

Your players must love other players to be good.

Don’t violate the “FIST”!

COMMUNICATION = TRUST

  • Language and tone of voice (AVOID SARCASM!)

  • Everyone must look each other in the eye.

  • Talk to players individually. Find something good!

  • Be kind to one another.

  • Sense of humor.

FAILURE IS OK (COMPETING vs WINNING) . . . (WOUNDS TO WISDOM)

  • Learn from failure: Abraham Lincoln – a string of failures before becoming the greatest President in our nation’s history.

  • Don’t worry about making mistakes – learn from them.

  • Embrace the “process”.Control your emotions.

  • Fully understand what goes into losing. Then we can win!

  • Adversity – Discouragement – Frustration – Referees – Subs – Injury

  • Survive thunderbolts!

Modeling is very important because kids will do what you do. Over the long haul, the team will be a reflection of the coach’s personality.

Great teachers make things seem “simple”.

You must have a “PASSION” for teaching. “Be positive.”
